Activision Threat To Stop Supporting Sony
Activision have threatened to stop supporting all Sony consoles, Sony remain unfazed by Activisions claims.

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has today attacked Sony and has even threatened to stop support altogether on Sony products meaning no COD, no Guitar Hero and more on the PS2, PS3 or PSP.
Speaking with The Times, Kotick said “I’m getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don’t make it easy for me to support the platform. It’s expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better. Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation”.
He continued his Sony damnation.
“They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates are likely to slow”, he continues. “If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony…When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console – and the PSP [portable] too”.
Kotick also expressed his dismay at the huge royalties third party publishers such as Activision were having to pay to Sony.
Later on as the story developed Sony were fairly quick to respond to Kotick’s outbursts and they really seemed relaxed and unfazed about the allegations.
“PlayStation has tremendous momentum coming out of E3, and we are seeing positive growth with more than 350 titles slated to hit across all our platforms, including many anticipated games from our publishing partners,” said Playstation spokesman Patrick Seybold. “We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.”
Sony’s have certainly brought about the right, confident response but you know it’s bad when one of the biggest game publishers threatens to stop support completly. I can’t help but feel that the old arguement is brewing once more, the one which says that Microsoft go to companies while Sony expects these same companies to come to them. This is one reason, critics say, that Sony have lost exclusives and are loosing out to Microsoft in the ‘timed exclusives’ area too.
As a PS3 owner, stories like this scare me, imagine if Activision followed through on their threat, would more publishers pull out? And if they did it’d be the end of the PS3 which would be quite a bit of money for me to loose and it must surely be too much for Sony themselves to loose.
I’ll be interested to see if Sony respond further and pratically to what Activision has said but for me saying that the PS3 has lost momentum is a poor excuse, obviously Kotick missed out on this years E3.
So what do you think? Would Activision be right to drop support for Sony consoles?
