Controversial Antichrist film to be made into a game

Lars Von Triers movie gained much controversy after its premiere at Cannes, the official website sums up the plot;
A grieving couple retreat to ’Eden’, their isolated cabin in the woods, where they hope to repair their
broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse…
The film has apparently “dead kids, nudity and graphical violence” and all of which, we are told, will make it into the forthcoming game.
“[The movie] goes against all the conventions of how you make games and what you can do in games. Dead kids, nudity, graphic violence. It will be a very controversial game, and it’ll be a game that doesn’t really compare with anything else,” game director Morten Iversen told MTV Multiplayer.
“Von Trier (Antichrist director) has been extremely fond of video games for ages, and has been an avid player of ‘Alone in the Dark,’” explained Iverson. “He’s been circulating the idea internally…that making games would be a good idea.”
Avid fan of Alone in the dark, is this worrying anyone?
Iversen, director of the Antichrist game which is dubbed ‘project Eden’ has previously worked on games and most notably he work at Io interactive as the writer for the ‘Hitman’ series for 6 years. Iversen said of the game; “We don’t expect Wal-Mart to roll in crates of this and put it on their shelves. Absolutely not available at Wal-Mart!”
Interestingly he also hinted that they aim the game to be download only and Iversen hopes it’ll make it onto platforms such as Steam and Xbox Live before describing the games style as a “nightmarish version of Myst.”
There are some very unique gameplay concepts at work, though. When you queue up the game, players will have to upload a profile, describing what their biggest phobias are. For example, are you afraid of spiders, loud noises or the dark? Based on that profile, certain themes will be loaded into the game to challenge you on those phobias.
When asked if he would make changes to the game to ensure it gets released Iversen replied “Yes, of course. Just like the movie, they made two versions so they can get released in countries like Italy and the US, [countries] that view things differently than we do in Denmark.” The game’s release will be edited, he confirmed, depending on region.
Iversen admitted that the game is likely a long time off and that it probably won’t be available until next year as his studio is currently only 4 and so is in need of a few more staff – wannabe game designers may want to keep an eye on this one!
Iversen was finally asked about the possibility of an Xbox 360 Natal version.
“Of course if Microsoft is interested, they could bring us an offer. Chopping of axes and stuff like that, I’m not sure Microsoft would be extremely happy to have a nihilist game with their technology.”
This is a game I’ll keep an eye out for, I’m into the controversial stuff and was already looking forward to the film release later this year. The phobia element sounds cool but I believe it’ll be linear, you’ll have to choose from a select amount of phobia’s and I can’t help but think that if it is a downloadable title then it may loose some of it’s visual effect.
Iversen also seems on the “any publicity is good publicity” train as he really hits on the explicit nature of the game, in his interview he even shouted ”Bring it on! Controversy!”.
Project Eden is in development by Zentropa and is expected in Q1 of 2010.
