Hulu “Why We Block PS3″
Hulu have spoken to G4TV regarding their decision to block access to their service from the Playstation 3. Here’s what they had to say:
“Everything we do is with an eye toward achieving our long-term goal of maximizing the content you can access as conveniently as possible in a way that ‘works’ for the content owner,” reads the response I received from customer service. “In the short-term that may require us to make some tough decisions, but we only do so when we believe it improves our long-term prospects to build a more enduring, legal solution to that same problem.”
G4TV explain that above this message there is a full explanation of the distribution models for television and movies (i.e. a movie starting in the theater, transitioning DVD and pay-per-view and eventually hitting pay-cable channels).
So they are saying they don’t want you to watch their shows on TV unless you’re watching it via cable or the actual network. They are saying that there is simply too much money at stake. If you can stream the episode for free instead of buying from Playstation Store we’d all do the same. Institutions are looking for an extra buck by forcing you to pay for the programs or rather attempting to make it your only option.
The wording of ‘legal solution’ suggests it’s an issue of one of the content providers on Hulu and again it’s all about money and as legality is brought into it don’t expect it to clear up soon.
Hulu conclude: “We hear your frustration, and solving it remains our full-time job”
